Night Flight To Venus

Without Prejudice

I ran to her and hugged her, hard, just about crushing every bone in her body.

My best friend, Syl. Only home a month from Slovenia and her partner for the last 12 months in Slovenia, dies.

She cried in helpless grief the tears dripping down and I stroked her hand.

" We never had a fight " she said of the man that had been so good to her..

She had left him at the Airport in Austria and he had been bawling like a baby, she said.

She cried as she said it.

Twelve years younger than she, Boyan had been, she thought she was safe.

She was travelling that night. A massive journey half way across the world to be at the funeral.

She had promised to go back, fly back, in three months time. But it was too late.

Her Night Flight To Venus had turned into a Night Flight to Nightmare.

Her dog she had left there, as he had learned to love her too, grew devoted to the King Charles Cavalier, Mischka.

Two days Boyan had lain there in the isolated farmhouse in the forest they had shared for twelve months. A massive heart attack at 60. Mischka, the dog, beside him and when the police arrived growing frantic she refused to leave her Masters side.

She will leave her there, Mischka, with friends. The cost prohibitive to bring her back to Australia. But Syl will return again to see her.

All her life from 13, living in Australia. Her Mother abandoning her aged 4. The Mofher making her escape from a war torn Yugoslavia, as was then. Clambering through barb wire and climbing hills to get to Freedom.

Syl never knew her Father, war rape, her Mother, Maria had said and sent for Syl when she was 13. From Australia, now married. For Syl in Yugoslavia, as was then. From a tiny village. Her grandparents good to her her Aunty not so. She said she was sent to school with a kick up the bum, never a kiss or hug.

She spoke no English when she came and did not know the woman called her Mother. The stepfather creepy. Touchy touchy feely. She left the home in East Bentleigh as soon as she could. Married the first man that came along to rescue her. Safe at last with kids and hubby.

Divorce, other partners came along. Kids, grandkids.

She left Boyan to return to her kids and Grandkids.

Falling out with them as soon as she arrived home.

One month home and on her own with one remaining son, she is bereft at leaving Boyan and Slovenia. Especially after falling out with her daughter in law. One Daughter in law of her other Son she has not spoken to in 10 years.

She doesn't get to see the Grandkids who she adores.

Maybe she just doesn't have the coping skills of living with and understanding family.

She said Boyan was an orphan, just like her. That's why they were so compatible.

She had another partner also an orphan, but it didn't work as he was very damaged and suffered from hoarding and buying things he didn't need.
He also drank a lot.

So she emailed me this morning.

The funeral was over 200 people.

She is beyond heartbreak. She returns to Australia in five weeks. Another Night Flight To Nightmare. I hope one day it turns, once again, in a Night Flight To Venus xxx
