Woman wins Divorce Settlement After 26 Years
A WOMAN has won a $1.2 million financial settlement with her husband 26 years after they divorced.
The court gave her permission to proceed with the property settlement application outside the normal time limit of a year.
The couple, in their 60s, divorced after 17 years' marriage and have two children. They came to an agreement, drawn up with lawyers' help, that the wife would remain in the family home, with the husband to pay the mortgage.
He also agreed to provide her with a car, cover private school fees and give her $180 a week.
In 2009 their son urged his mother to secure ownership of the home, which remained in her husband's name, but the man refused.
Federal Magistrate Peter Cole accepted there had been a power imbalance and it had not been in the couple's interests to force a financial settlement before.
