When Mum and Dad had emigrated they had left the cold and their families far behind. 12'000 miles to be exact. I had never known an aunt grandparent cousin, uncle.

I knew only of the parcels that arrived at Christmas full of Wine Gums and Pontefract Teacakes, tubes of smarties and selection boxes and Annuals of Beano and Girls Crystal. Sent by my Grannie Wilsher.

They sang us a welcome and dived happily for coins thrown by the passengers in a shallow and clear green blue sea. Looking down was dazzling, the sea acting like a prism of light lighting the sandy bottom
