Violent Men

Without Prejudice

It's been a long time since we had to deal with one, but tonight one came, luckily this time he didn't come for us. Unluckily it was Dee, a neighbour. We heard the window breaking then the screams. The big bad boys hovered behind the door, just listening at first.

He started beating her in the street and Yvette vaulted the gate. It's 6 foot high. I was right behind her and at that instant the boys in blue arrived. Two divvy vans. They had him down in seconds, handcuffed and he swore, yelled.

(I've heard this same story a thousand times, so much so Yvette and I sat in the dark listening to his

Yelling and we both knew we could write the script)

He couldn't see us as we listened.

" it was all that bitches fault"
"I was just trying to be a nice guy, ask that whore, slut, "

The boys said they saw him crash through the window, they said there were yells and screams before that. They ran to get Yvette and I

As soon as she saw him pin her to the ground she was up and over that gate like a woman possessed. I asked her what she was going to do, later on, when things had calmed down a bit

"Get in between them and scream for all the boys. (The 23 year old, two 17 year olds, one 16 year old and one 14 year old, )

"they'd beat the shit out of him"

The dude in the street was howling about he was bleeding, he was cut from crashing through the window. Its a wonder he wasn't dead. He went on and on for a good half hour, wrangling verbally with the cops and finally was driven off in the back of the divvie wagon.

The police had come so quickly, we were impressed. Usually for a domestic they take ages and we know they hate call outs to domestics.

We wanted to run over to comfort the young girl over the road. The police were there ages
and the little boys were upset and crying, so we had to make sure they went to bed,
ok. And the big boys were all keyed up. Pumped up on testerone and adrenalin.

As we ran to help I felt no sense of fear, that came later as Yvette and I sat in my unit and tried to dissect it all. The police came and spoke to her and she came out to tell me. We ended up talking for hours as we watched Hurricane Sandy bearing down on New York.

We talked about our own violent men from so long ago and how you never forget that feeling, those sounds. They almost always break glass. It's a thing they do. They are usually skinny weedy and instead of alcohol these days, it's almost always they are pumped up on Ice. The new meth, speed and according to my hard working son in law, half of Melbourne is on it.

I went to leave Dee a note in a card, yesterday,  as the police encouraged her to leave the house for a few days. I heard a tv playing, the mailbox smashed beyond repair. I hesitated a nd then knocked and Dee came to the door. She wasn't too bad, cuts bruises. We talked as i handed her a card and a note from Yvette and I.

She met G only 5 months ago, he was great, she said, friendly, out going, adoring. She's a single Mum, with a 14 year old son and a daughter that lives with ex hubbie. He was Fabulous at first, but then she found out he was on Ice and threw him out. He returned twice to batter the house and her.

We didn't hear the first one when he smashed the glass panels on the door. But the second one came last Monday night, and everyone jumped in to help. Even the Police. It's all since Jill Meaghers death and so it should be. He could have killed her.

The law locked him up for 3 hours, she already has an IVO, and they had to let him go. He rang her, sorry, straight away. But the next day he had another hit of Ice. I let her know, Yvette and I had been through the same and if there was ever a next time to call or run to get us. She didn't want to be a nuisance.

I said bollocks to that, her kids need a Mother.

Love janette
