The Man Made House---Kevin McCloud

Without Prejudice

Kevin McCloud's Man Made Home is a British television series, broadcast on Channel 4. The series features Kevin McCloud's attempt at building a sustainable eco-friendly shed in the woods. In order to achieve this, he decided to use only the materials locally available in the woodland where the shed was to be built, or to employ only recycled materials. Series 1 aired on 23 September 2012 and finished four weeks later on 13 October 2012.
The shed that was successfully produced during the first series, was transportable to avoid the need for planning permissions. Thus in the second series, McCloud decided to relocate the shed to Watchet, on the coast of Somerset where he expanded it, employing a nautical theme to match its location overlooking the sea. The second series aired almost, exactly one year after the first, on 22 September 2013. It finished on 13 October 2013.

Kevin McCloud has traveled all over the world to some weird and wacky locations and dwelling but none is as unusual or heartfelt as his man made home ( read shed ) at Watchet on a cliff top overlooking the sea.

It's small, it's sustainable and I hope it is still there. I would love to see it for real but seeing that would take a stomach churning twenty odd flying time hours for me I doubt I ever will.

But as they say, the beauty is in the journey not the arrival I will step myself and you, dear readers, through the journey.

The English might see Kevin McCloud as a bit of a brainy sex symbol, I know I do. Give me a man with an intelligent enquiringly mind with glasses and I am hooked. Plus he has a lot of pluck, naked showering in an icy cold waterfall with a mate, soaping himself with hand made soap made from fish oil and other gunk, to me, means the man has a sense of adventure, bravery, humour, all sexy to a woman.

I love the way he is prepared to recycle strange and exotic or even just mundane materials to achieve his vision. The truck windscreens are a touch of genius as are the Perspex airplane Windows that turn into a shimmering glass screen and a genius touch of unexpected beauty.

Kevin was prepared to do anything it takes to achieve his goal. His homemade bed, ( hammock that is a wonder in itself to behold ) along with its unusual, unique supports, one a two tonne anchor. Kevin gets stuck in with grinding, welding, wiring and it is very sexy to watch a learned bookish man getting his hands dirty and scratched. Seems to be exactly what a mans man needs to do. The grunt work.

If you get a chance to watch the whole series please indulge yourself. I picked it up long after it had been aired, almost accidentally, and was transfixed. The sunset pictures viwed through his hand made screens as he reclines on his hand made lookout, drink in hand are
worth the wait, the struggle, the vision to get there. And he is one happy man.
