70s fashion

Without Prejudice

By the end of the 70's Deb was turning 10 and already a fashion maven. Once she received she started saving for her own outfits but before then it was up to me and I was 28. I shopped at Cue, when it wasn't made just for size 6 dolls. Yvette was another wholw story in herself and at 8 bought her first outfit, a pink net tutu with a gold bodice. She twirled in that outfit for years and probably still has it somewhere in her wardrobe.

Alena wore whatever she had bought for her,  so did Lauren, brand names hadn't hit them by then. I could safely shop at Venture and Fosseys and Woolies for a while before "Just Jeans" took over. My MIL said that once the girls went into jeans they would not go back to dresses and that was true. I had begun the 70's pregnant with deb and had no idea of maternity fashion, it was all big, ugly and hot.

I cut up other dresses and my Sis in Law made me some but all the time I felt like the Darrell Lea shopgirls with a big dress and a big bow at the neck. Hideous. After I had Deb I breast fed for 3 months and then was pregnant again and staright back into maternity clothes. I kept my job at KFC until I started to show and that was a good 7 months in. My doctor, a heart specialist and obstetrician made me keep to a stict diet with Yvette as I still had weight on after Deb.

I ended up lighter at the end of the pregnancy than what I was when I had begun and I could wear anything. I was 8 st 4lb and getting thinner by the day. Then I became obsessed with fashion, Laure was skinny too so we bought the same things and swapped clothes. I could afford the better things and she had the eye for colour and sexiness.

Tops were body hugging cardis with hipster flares and cork platforms or white or ecru cheesecloth dresses with crochet trim. I loved the black midi skirt worn with boots and a black or purple buttoned clinging body shirt and a wide patent leather belt at the waist.

B had been with me in Myers when I picked it and he loved it. he paid for it, that time. Usually I would use my tiny earnings or child endowment or money cadged out of housekeeping to buy things, but soon found I could wheedle things out of B when he was feeling generous. For generous read tipsy, ha ha.
