Cleaning The 5 Star Way

Without Prejudice

I learned to clean 5 star while I was a lowly housemaid at the Royal Pines Resort and The Sheraton Mirage on the Gold Coast. I was a grand mother of just one then and took the first job offered so I could be with him as much as I could. My Grandson, Kyle, aged 3. I hated the work at first. At The Royal Pines we had to wear heeled court shoes and work on our own.

At Sheraton we could wear sneakers and work in pairs and that was easier on your back and feet. We were first taught how to clean a room 5 star way and then we were taught to do it at a fast pace. I never made as many beds in my life and now have to make them the same at home and others houses. I clean five star in all places now and it is easy and efficient and was one of the best practical things I have ever learned and I love it.

I can now clean a whole house from dirty to clean in three hours and then do a maintenance once a week or every few days and it will always be spotless and tidy. It suits my anally obsessive behaviour, keeps me fit and soothes any anxiety or tension. I admit there are times when I am on my knees cleaning a floor and I will think,
"Who am I, Cinder fucking rella ?"

But I smile shrug it off as I love doing it and just get on with it. Its a good foil for my academic mind and I think of ideas and stories as my brain is concentrated only on mundane tasks and can roam thought freely. I like to have music on and rope the whole family in if they are home. Setting the alarm for a strict 30 minutes and we all rush around and see how much we can get done and then when the alarm goes off we sit and have a cuppa.

The house will be sparkling, have more energy in it and we will be energised too. Half an hour nothing out of your day but makes for easier and more organised living and gives you more free time to do what you want. I like to write so I devote the morning from 7am to 2pm in the afternoon to it. I find after that I tire too quickly and my shoulders and arms get sore from sitting at the Computer. I do walk around every hour or so, check on the kids, or have morning tea, lunch, but it's hurried, straight back to work at the computer.

Sometimes I will stop what I am doing and go socialise on Facebook, text one of the girls or a friend, prepare a meal, hang out the washing, but unless it's urgent I write first and then do the tasks allotted. Then it's clean, clean and clean. Then something creative, read, watch a documentary on cleaning and transforming houses or elegant living. Fall asleep on the couch for 10 minutes reading a book and then it all starts all over again. I might edit a story, cook a meal and relax with family.

I love spending time with the family talking about the day, solving things, making things and petting the animals. Then it's my time of time for me and I will do my nails, put on a mask, moisturise, exfoliate, relax in PJ' pants and old tee and curl up on the couch and watch re runs of The Housewives of Wherever as it's mindless pap and sometimes I just don't want to think, just "Be".

I am loving Foxtel at the moment as I don't have it at home and my daughters house in Rowville where I am now does. I watch everything after the family has gone to bed as I am a rotten sleeper and like to go to bed around 12pm or 1 and they are in bed usually by 10. 10.30. I like the solitary hours. I am a person happy enough in company, love it, crave it sometimes and then I have to have my personal time or I get really ratty.

I love time to myself. And i love fun, today is Pants Off Friday at our house, or PJ pants all day. It's the school holidays, the weather is foul and we have fun on wet days and that is exactly what I am going to do now,
Back to my number two job or three, looking after kids and cleaning or finding things for Ebay or sitting and twiddling my thumbs, while my brain is ticking away, all fun and all utterly fulfilling, who cares, right ?????

Love Janette
