Are We Turning Into Psychopaths?

Without Prejudice

A psychologist came out recently and said that because of Social Media and the Internet in general we are turning into self obsessed zombies. And psychopathic in a way.

By not meeting face to face as much we are losing empathy for others. By having a wall up when we text, email or post we are not really saying what we feel really but what we think others want to hear.

Also trying to be popular we are losing our real senses of humour, irony and sarcasm.

I have been at breakfast recently at the Golden Arches and observed people sitting at the same table never talking to each other but completely absorbed in their phones and IPads.

Is our love of gadgetry and novelty spoiling our lives.

In the last year I have received news of sad deaths by text.

I am still of the generation where I pick up a phone and talk to people.

I need that inflection in the voice as a text, email can be misread as it shows no emotion. I guess that's why we have emojis now.

I have learned that fact the hard way.

I have sent text messages to the wrong person. Trusted auto correct and caused confusion to others. My short handed version of Saturday to Sat puzzled my daughter for ages.

I have watched as people walk and text at the same time. Drive while using the phone and text of course.

Do we think of ourselves as that important that we think what we are about to impart is that crucial ?

Or that a phone call is about to announce that we are the only person in the World that is going to cure cancer, stop a War ? So we must answer it immediately, even in the toilet? ( I have known people to admit to this ) remind me not to borrow their phone.

I have seen men in the supermarket on the phone asking their wives if they should get the blue packet or the red.

Tables full of people at the airport all talking on their phones and not to their kids. The kids were all on the floor on their IPads.

The Doctors show showed the damage being on exciting games can do to a young person. A 23 year old male went from resting heart rate of 80 to over 200 once he was gaming. If he had presented at a doctors office with that heart rate at his age he would have been hospitalised.

Long term use of exciting games at fast heart rates enlarges the heart long term.

Gamers playing for hours at a time, sometimes all night or 24 hours are becoming addicts. The addiction just as bad as Heroin or worse. Kids should not be allowed to be on the Internet more than one or two hours.

A psychologist friend telling me he was counselling two 15 year old boys with intense gaming addictions. One had not been out of his room, except to pee or eat for two and a half years,

His parents took him to the psychologist in the end.

As the Internet becomes more fascinating and exciting every day we are developing more psychopathic tendencies. We are acting in God like ways as we dump lovers by text or email. I remember in the nineties PHIL Collins dumping his wife by fax and the furore that caused.

We as a family have decided the kids are not going on games for more than one or two hours and only after they have done their chores. Electronics including phones get turned off at 8.30 and that includes us, the adults.
