On The Trail Of Charles Sobhraj---The Pureness Of Evil And Friedrich Nietzsche Chapter Two

Without Prejudice

Doped up on high strength Paracetemol ( Is there such a thing ? ) I began reading The Life And Crimes Of Charles Sobhraj. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting, or lying down most of the time. Stopping only for loo breaks and coughing breaks and the visit from the idiot Doctor.

He confirmed what I already knew. I had a nasty virus. My daughter who lives close by has had it for three weeks, ever since the day I told her to get a flu jab. I have never heard the end of it since. Sore eyes, throat, ears blocked, she hasn't had the mucus and cough I do but God, what a whinger. Twenty one days of sheer misery and a sore arm from the injection too.

What was good with the dark skinned doctor was that he told me I had clear lungs. I always wonder about my lungs as I smoked ciggies for years. No trouble with the lungs and he seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time checking them. This happens with me sometimes, as I am sure they are also just men and think,

" How can someone that small, have such an enormous rack" " And are they real ? "

Yes well they are, and my ex used to say he would hate to have them hanging over his eyes as a wart. Suffer Turkey, I am now skinny with a big rack, just what you always wanted you said. Sweet justice that I hate your guts.

Enough said about that.

Back to the other Cobra, Charles Sobhraj.

What a great man he could have been if he had been born straight and not bent. The way he could con his way out of anything has to be read to be believed. He was cultured, talented, educated, loved Friedrich Nietzsche and women with a passion.

Abandoned by his Father and left with an emotionally cold Mother he was imprisoned young and never forgot the experience. He made a fortune and seemed determined to lose it by gambling it away as if having money made no sense to him.

He became an International gems dealer of some renown but then would rob the very rich customers of trifles. Based in Bangkok and making a lucrative living he would befriend young hippy backpackers and drug and rob them of their Passports, cash and travellers checks.

And in the end along with his Indian Assistant, (  merely a boy, ) murder them.

Set them alight with petrol as they still lay breathing. Crush their windpipes, beat them with boards, stab them. And leave the bodies lying unhidden in the calm Thai countryside. As if to say,

" You don't matter "

The times were the sixties and seventies and young backpackers went to Asia looking for cheap travel, adventure, experiences, and sometimes cheap gems and drugs.

Charles went out of his way to befriend them, offer to solve any problems they might be having. A father figure, even though he was not that much older than them. But a deadly Father Figure as it turned out for eight or nine of them.

He had a residence set up of a couple of flats in a complex in Kanit House in Bangkok. He offered them cheap accomodation, plying them with food, drinks, hospitality, all served by his partner, an attractive bubbly French Canadian girl, Marie Leclerc, who was to become surly and sullen. With good reason it turned out.

Charles had taken her away from a fiancé and promised her the world. She believed in him in a naive romantic way that never wavered no matter how trying the circumstances.
She was determined to make him love her, she said,  in one of her journal entries.

" But little by little I became his Slave "

Also known as The Bikini Murders, the bodies of the young back packers began turning up with a regularity that seemed to make no sense to the local police. It was thought at first that they were victims of overdoses of heroin until the bodies started showing up hideously mutilated and burnt.

Meanwhile the safe in the dwelling of Kanit House began to fill with not just precious gems, especially rubies and sapphires, but with Passports, travellers checks and cash. No one suspected, no one knew.

It was to be a deadly mix of hidden drugs in drinks, greed and the unfortunate meeting of a charming charismatic man that murdered these children of the world. Headed for an adventure in life, beloved of families who would never forget them, they were lured into the jaws of the Cobra, Charles Sobhraj.
