The sun shines at last and we get out and about, Denise and I. Its good to be amongst the crowds up town who are all enjoying the sunny weather and the nights seem long with twilights that go on forever. We can stay out till 9pm and its still bright. Denise and I have bought matching cut away polo neck tops, sleeveless and it feels so strange to feel the sun on my arms. Other people are all wearing cardigans still and sweating cobs I imagine. It's not cardigan wearing weather, thst's for sure.
We pop into Boots the Chemist and spend ages looking at makeup. I sniff the Max Factor pancake make up and we try the frosted lipsticks, mine pink and Denise's white. We look like vampires but are really trying for a Twiggy look. She is so fab and we are desperate to look like her. I love her short hair and big panda eyes and pale complexion and frosted lips. There is a new eye liner that rims your eyes with PVC, it's all shiny and black and you can peel it off in one line.
We try on perfume samples and dust ourselves with the bath powders when we think no one is looking. We walk out again into the sun and see Granny Wilsher and she gives me two bob for hot chips. We eat them out of the top of the paper sittting in front of Wakefield Cathedral which is years old and used to belong to the Saxons. We make our way down to the bakery where Auntie Pam Works and she treats us to some Battenburg cake which tasted of marzipan. Then across to Wakefield Market where we can buy broken bits of Bonfire Toffee and Frys 5 flavoured choc bars,
Then we head off back to the bottom of Westgate and Denise's house. Her Mum meets us out the front. She looks worried and has been crying A girl we don't know has been found stabbed to death not far from Denises's house. She was 13. Elsie Fox her name was and the police are going house knocking to see where we all were on that day. She was stabbed all over and had put up her hand to stop whoever was stabbing her and the blade went through the back of her hand as well. I can't believe that something so awful could have happened here.
