Getting Maddy Out
Without Prejudice
I was prepared to just see Maddy as another girlfriend of my Grandson Kyle. Oldest son of my daughter, Yvette. He had been broken up from his girlfriend Angie about 6 months. He had been with Angie for a few years and Angie was an orphan.Kyle always felt responsible for Angie, so she was more than just a girlfriend to a young boy.
So when they broke up it was not good nor pretty and left them both reeling. But Kyle knew a lot of it was his fault. There were tears and yelling matches and a lot of hatred on both sides for a while
He brought Mladenka (Pronounced Madenka ) home as he always gets us to meet his girlfriends. She was quiet, outstandingly sweet and well spoken. Dressed like a lady. I liked her. She came many times and was finishing year 12. She told us nothing, yet about her background.
Her Father and Mother Serbian. Kyle had gone to school with her brother and she knew Kyle from Dandy High. She had said once she would rather eat dirt than go out with a "player" like Kyle.
But she hung around and we decided we liked her. One day as I was driving her home she told me about her Dad and how things were not good at home. I listened with one ear as I was driving and then she said the words that rocked me,
"He tried to touch me once when Mum was away overseas and I called the Police on him. I have always locked myself in my room since I was a little girl"
I listened.
The Father had been affected by the war in Serbia. And drank heavily and made an idiot of himself at gatherings. The Mother a sweet quiet lady was scared of her husband and Maddy often had to step in and defend her Mother.
He told Maddy he had never wanted a girl, his sons were his life. She was dumb, she was a bad daughter. She was a piece of shit, the abuse went on and on and a teacher at school noticed her bruises and her downcast demeanour.
To speak against family was not easy for Maddy, so ingrained in the Serbian culture as she was. "Skips" were not to be trusted. The teacher reported the abuse and Maddy wished he hadn't as for her things were worse ever after. Maddy's Mum wanted to leave her husband and they no longer had a relationship but pretended to the community they were together.
Maddy was doing Year 12 and working part time and all her money went to the Family. She had no idea of the outside world as she had always gone to her room to avoid her Dad. And she became anorexic, bulimic, fitness obsessed, she kick boxed and taught it to underprivileged kids. But at home in the darkness of her room she watched movies about anorexics, fighters, and cut herself.
I told Yvette, Kyle's Mum, my 2nd oldest daughter. Yvette had also been sexually assaulted when young so we both spoke to Maddy and drew her out about her feelings. The Mother rang her all the time with problems and Maddy would have to be home and studying or working. She dressed beautifully and was always well groomed. She was 17.
Kyle told her when he met her he had done a lot of bad stuff when he broke up with Angie and all of it was about to come to fruition shortly. She didn't care, whatever Kyle did was wonderful to Maddy as he had already started defying her parents rules and told Maddy she had the right to do the same. Maddy's brothers had told her different. They had said to put up with the Dad, he wasn't so bad etc.
I didn't freak about her situation as I had been in these sort of scenarios before and usually was able to extract the girls from bad homes. Her situation was a lot more immediate however as he had already crossed the barrier from Father to monster. She was a good girl, a virgin and her faith told her to remain that way until she married a boy the parents had selected.
And then our world went belly up. The "stuff" arrived for Kyle. When he broke up with Angie he had decided to "Hate the world" and did. He had quit his job with his Nana Pam, he was hanging with bad boys, younger, and went on a path of rebelliousness that Yvette and I could not control.
Police kept turning up on our door step and Kyle kept ignoring them. He couldn't afford the reg on his Commodore so he and the other boys had benn stealing number plates and putting them on his car. And finally the Police caught up with them, Kyle was banged up in the Dandy cells we found out. He was in court by the Monday and we went thinking it was just a bail release hearing.
The Judge was elderly and not happy with young punks that kept avoiding the Police. He was known as the hanging judge and we felt slightly alarmed when Simon. Kyle's Father, who was an addict fired the Solicitor before lunch. we went in after lunch, dying to see Kyle finally. No Solicitor, Simon (the nutter that should have known better) decided in his "Juiced" up state that Kyle should defend himself.
Never ever defend yourself in a Court room, especially if you are a young man of 20 in trouble. But Alena Mara who were there as was I and Maddy and one of the boys (underage) who had been caught with Kyle. Kyle was led in, ugly bottle green track suit, hair everywhere and he looked scared.
He was sent to jail, straight to jail, no get out jail free card, no $200, Alena and Mara screamed in terror. Alena said,
"Good on you locking up kids you mean old man"
Mara said something too to the elderly judge and we all escaped outside before Alena and Mara were arrested themselves for contempt.
Maddy was crying in the toilets and collapsed and was sent by ambulance to hospital. Simon was out in the car park, "juiced" up on "juice", (like liquid ecstasy) that made him sweat and shake. I had to grab hold of Mara and Alena and tell them to calm the fuck down, none of this was helping Kyle.
Mara and I went home to Alena's and we all sat outside and started hatching plans. The first person we got on board was Debbie, my oldest daughter. She had fallen out with Kyle when he started his rebellion and wasn't sure if she wanted to be involved. All of Kyle's friends, Deb, me, started raising funds for Kyles defence, We decided we had to get him a lawyer and fast.
Mara and I and Alena set to with a vengeance to get his case reheard, he was 20, first offence and skinny, defenceless. We knew he wasn't a fighter. Not a physical fighter anyway. His Dad Simon had enemies in jail. And Kyle was sent to the BIG jail, the adult jail the maximum security jail at St Albans.
We met a fantastic free lawyer named Aron and he took Kyle's case on but told us Kyle was in a lot more trouble than first thought. There was a string of driving offences that hadn't been heard. But he liked Kyle and wanted to help. We ricocheted off walls for a while. Yvette and I had a viciuos fight about her not being in court for her Son.
Yvette at that time had just given birth to her 7th boy and stood firm on tough love. Kyle had been a pain to her for a long time, treated her like shit as she was going out with one of Kyle's Boyhood friends and had had 2 boys to him. Kyle hated the whole idea of his Mum being with his friend, who was younger than Kyle by six months.
We rang my ex husband or Mara did and she had him on speaker phone. She asked for $100 to help with Kyle's defence. Kyle had worked some weeks for his Grandad earlier in the year. My ex asked Kyle to take up a debt of $63,000 he had. Kyle agreed his credit rating was shot anyway and I disagreed but he did it anyway.
"No",
came the answer from "Bobby", he was broke, didn't even have $100 to his name, his new wife took care of all that. We knew he was lying but thats just him, always do someone a bad favour never a good one unless it's to "Buy" their loyalty.
"Yvette's useless anyway, and Kyle's a loser", he continuedand then apropos of nothing he mentioned me.
"That Janette's pretty useless too"
Mara rolled her eyes and hung up. No joy there just the same old Bob.
Even after 22 years of divorce.
So I went to stay at Deb's for 6 weeks and her and I both being anal and organised took up the challenge. We kept it quiet but somehow my older brother in QLD heard about it, George. George came on board immediately and offered to fly down a friend of his, a top gun lawyer in Sydney. We had to get Kyle released on bail somehow. None of us had seen him yet but we heard rumours that he was going to be "Get Got" on jail.
That knowledge spurred us on and we nearly went nuts with calls and helpful friends and Maddy's grief and this whole surreal episode took on a darker and murkier tone. I was at my Sister In Laws wedding at Frankston and hiding in the ti trees talking to Mara's ex re getting protection for Kyle on the inside. The offer of help was also immediate, R. had known Kyle from a toddler. He said he would get him "looked after" and not to worry.
I knew he could do this as he had done the same thing for Maras brother who had been locked up in jail for 7 years for lighting a fire at his old school. Eddie was ill with schizophrenia like Mara's Father had been, but they still locked him up in a jail. R made sure his passage was an easy one. Eddie is now in a specialised unit facilty in Dandenong and as well and as happy as he can be. He will never recover from his illness but it can be managed.
Deb and I got doctors on board, arranged for counsellors and one day Deb drove all the way out to the jail in St. Albans. I was the only person on his list at that time, God knows why, Kyle and I at that time hated each other. I kept trying to stop him doing what he was doing and he thought I was just an interfering Nanna.
So I went through all the security checks, air blown up my dress, eyes scanned, and then I was allowed to meet up with Kyle in the canteen. It was bad, it was really bad but that story is for another day. I will return to Maddy.
Maddy's parents didn't know she was even going out with anyone and then one day she could hold it in no longer and told her Mum. Her Mum is a lovely lady and she said to Maddy it was ok to love this boy, this "skip" but to be aware he might be trouble, she might get her heart broken. The father was not made aware of anything. And the rules around Maddy going out to see us became suddenly tighter.
We'd meet her around corners or walking up the road towards Rowville from Doveton, her home. She would walk along the "Police Paddocks" road at the back of Endeavour Hills, no matter how hot, mo matter that it was miles, she would walk towards Debbies house and seek sanctuary there. She'd sneak out at night to meet with us. meanwhile she was graduating from Year 12 and her man was "banged up". She told no one and went to the graduation party with one of her Serbian friends.
She had dreamed of Kyle being there with her but it was not to be so we focused on getting him out by his birthday the 15th of November, he would be 21. Maddy slipped away from the family more and more, bolder and bolder. Always the Mother would call her with a drama or an upset and Maddy the ever dutiful daughter would return home to sort out the Mother and Fathers messes.
Deb and I decided after I told her about Maddy's dad that we would kill two birds with one stone. We would do the impossible, get Kyle out, set him up in his own place and then we coud rescue Maddy out of her home situation and keep Kyle on the straight and narrow. It was a Gordian Knot, the task seemed impossible, but we took it a day at a time.
George my brother came down, we heard from the lawyer in Sydney and he was fabulous with a great realistic attitude. He decided Aron was doing a great job and we didn't really need him but he gave us invaluable advice. George helped out with finance and practical help and Kyle's case was reheard and he was allowed out after six weeks of hell.
Deb and Andrew her hubby have a caravan, "The Windsor" and that became home to Kyle and Maddy. But Maddy would still have to go back home all the time. So then we started getting a flat for them and Kyle in work and Maddy was still at her part time job. And giving her money to her parents.
There was a celebratory party at Deb and Andrews in Rowville the day he came home. Georgia had made a welcome home Kyle banner, we were all so happy until Deb took to Yvette because she hadn't helped and then it was all on for young and old. Yvette took umbrage there was lots of stamping and screaming and Yvette took off screaming abuse out of her window.
At the same time Kyle and Maddy came back from a walk and went to walk up the driveway and I was out the front telling Yvette to calm down. I returned to the driveway and joined Kyle and Maddy and suddenly this maniac neighbour jumped out of the bushes and said
"What the fuck is going on ?"
We all leaped back as one and Kyle was really polite and said Family Party, all good. But that wasn't enough for this nut next door, he was right in Kyle's face and I pushed him and said something along the lines of,
"Why don't you go and get fucked you stupid man!"
He was really loony and said again this time straight into my face (God, I loathe men like this !)
"What the FUCK is going on ? "
I could feel the spit from his mouth on my face.
I pushed Kyle and Mladenka away and Ashleigh, my grand daughter backwards towards the house. This man was aggressive and shouting and saying
"Get me the man of the house? "
He tried to get past me into the house and I pushed him with both hands and said for some inexplicable reason,
Get the fuck off the lawn, you paedophile"
Don't ask me why I said it, maybe I sensed something about the way he was looking at Ash who was 14. I have no idea as Deb and I had had a few Champagnes in celebration. I locked the door on the creep man, but Andrew, my son in law came tottering out. he's so affable Andrew, and loves a drink or ten.
This idiot from next door took a swing at Andrew and Andrew ducked and Andrew then just strted arguing with the man and I knew that would go on for hours so I went out the back and finished my drink. Every night from that day to this Deb raises the creaky roll a door on ger garage at 11 pm every night just to annoy him. the neighbour and his Stepford fat butted wife.
We finally were able by the April of the following year, 8 months after Kyle was locked up to have them both living together, both working, Kyle having counselling the rest of the time and doing his CBO stuff. When Maddy was able to leave the home the one thing she tough was going to happen didn't happen. Her Mother was ok. Maddy didn't have to protect her anymore, she was fine.
And one day she came to me in my unit and we talked of her past and I knew she liked English so I asked her to write her story. In her own words, you can read it under the heading,
"Escaping Serbia and Other Cultures.
She wrote it in half an hour and hopes it helps other girls like her trapped in cultures that demand children stay within certain boundaries and that men are not afraid to beat them or hurt them to keep them at home and away from Aussie culture as it it's wicked and wrong. She wrote of her Dads endless drunken rants at them, his sexual assault of her. She wrote it bravely and strong and at the end she said,
"And then I met a wonderful boy". My Grandson Kyle.
Its now 2 years down the track and Maddy glows as she has 4 weeks to go to having her first baby. Kyle and her lost a little one at 11 weeks so this one is just going to be overwhelmed with love. She loves her life, she and Kyle and 2 of Kyles's brothers live together in a fantastic modern unit in Noble Park. Kyle is a trainee manager at Coles Liqorland, Maddy has just finished work, working for Pam, Kyle's other Nana.
She awaits the birth of her baby and she is engaged to Kyle. Kyle did all the counselling and all of his CBO stuff. he will soon be free of all of the drama he caused. And don't worry Kyle owned up to everything straight away. He knew it was his fault and was prepared to do his time of at least 6 months. He's lucky he has no record, his being locked up for 6 weeks considered enough punishment.
Although when he goes to his "corrections' Appointments and cleans up pig poo at the farms or papers from the road, I'm sure he rues the day he defied the Police.
And to see Maddy as she is now, safe, secure is such a joy. The Mum made the Father give up drinking and forced a meeting with Kyle and Deb and Andrew and her husband and he was delighted to meet them all and he and she are delighted to be grand parents of a baby boy soon, Andre, I think. Kyle rescued Maddy and she in turn rescued him and now we can sit back and smile and know all the effort and the Super Human effort by Debbie, Kyles aunt and second Mother is to be commended.
Love always Janette
I was prepared to just see Maddy as another girlfriend of my Grandson Kyle. Oldest son of my daughter, Yvette. He had been broken up from his girlfriend Angie about 6 months. Kyle rescued Maddy and she in turn rescued him and now we can sit back and smile and know all the effort and the Super Human effort by Debbie, Kyles aunt and second Mother is to be commended.
Love always Janette
