Running Girl

Without Prejudice

She walked the back roads to get to her future, ran too, loping like a gazelle, focused, determined and never ever scared, bless her. She was disciplined and rock hard and once we said she didn't have to put up with it, she was out and walking, running towards the world. No longer hidden in a bedroom, dark, watching movies and exercising obsessively. She walked the back roads, no matter what the time, and no matter what the time, Deb would go to pick her up. Meet her half way.Me too, Yvette, Alena, we all helped.

My darling girls all rallied to get her out, finding out her Dad was difficult. My girls knew what that was like. So we joined forces no matter what to get Mladenka out of home and placed in a future, a future she wanted. She wanted Kyle my Grandson, she had once famously said when at Dandenong High that she would rather eat dirt than go out with someone like him.

Kyle had a reputation as a Player, God know what they see in him ! Just kidding, he's nice looking and he has a good funny nature. And he cares. OMG does Kyle care. he asked me to befriend her and together we would get her out. And when I did find out the whole truth about her home situation, it became a matter of urgency.

So we moved in slowly and carefully, waiting around corners for her. Advising and counselling and having fun when she was with us. She walked the back roads of the Police Paddocks from Doveton to Rowville, didn't matter if it was 40 degrees, she walked, jogged and would arrive sometimes dripping with sweat.

And suddenly she was out, it took about eight months in total but by the time she was 19 she was independent and living with Kyle, first a small unit for 12 months and a bigger fabulous one now. She worked hard as did Kyle, worked and worked and slept. She was pregnant, over the Moon and lost the baby at 11 weeks, so very sad.

But she tried again and now we have a perfect little baby boy, half Serbian and Half "Skip". Kyle for some reason has always been friends with other nationalities. At Dandy High he hung around with the rich albanians and dressed neat like them. He wanted to be a "wog", he said. He bought the hotted up cars they do, powerful, V8, too powerful for him and I can only laugh now as he might have to go to a Family Sedan.

Everything had to be new for the baby, Kyle would not hear of anything second hand. I know what he's going to be like as a Dad. He's the oldest of 7 brothers, there's not much he doesn't know about babies and toddlers and older boys, He takes care of two of his older brothers and has for a year now. Once he had a place the oldest 2 wanted to go with him. We were sad but it seemed the right thing. Must be, as they are never here anymore.

When Kyle was little I was stunned at his maturity and care. Brock his younger brother had asthma and Kyle watched out for him. He would have only been 10 when he took his own sweater off and wrapped his brother in it. Kyle rode bare chested to the shop for his Mum with his brother on the back wrapped in his sweater. It was midwinter and when I saw him later I said,
"Duff, what were you thinking?"

Do you know what he said, this skinny over tall boy of 10.
"It was after 4.30 Nan, Brock could have an Asthma attack because of the cold"
One time he found Brock slumped in the lounge room and called his Mother, Brock was rushed to the hospital that day and nearly didn't survive. The ambulance stopped on the road and pulled over and Yvette following behind thought he's died.

They wanted Yvette in the ambulance while they gave him the needle in the back of his hand. He was in for weeks and we were so glad when he pulled through. He had gone from being well to almost dead within a few short hours. But Kyle was the one that found him and sounded the alarm. Yvette just thought he was very tired and sleeping.

Kyle and Maddy have made the journey together. Out of the traps of their lives and made it to the Future. They both so deserve it. Kyle is now a Manager at a big Liqor chain, he started an apprenticeship in automotive and worked at a part time job 5 nights a week. He loved the part time job and hated the apprenticeship. So now he has his job, his girl and his perfect little baby. I am one happy Grandma and Great Grandma and cry as I write this and think how lucky I am xx
