Money makes the world go around

Without Prejudice

So what happened to equal pay for equal work ? When I was at John Sands they employed a new guy with no credit experience and there was a balls up and us ladies in credit found out he was going to be on $5,000 a year more than us. we had to go to the Union to get it sorted and it was such a shit fight and the guy ended up leaving because of the clear hostility from the women.

Why don't we get the same wage as men for the same Job ? It causes men to come out with silly statements. I saw one just yesterday and he actually said on TV in this day and age that he earns 3 times the salary his wife does, therefore he is more important. And lets face it men do not like their woman earning more than them. If we can change that sort of thinking we would be doing well.

But I can't see it happening in my life time. The highest paid jobs for women are protitution and modelling. So great, a career of no substance with usually, substance abuse and be dressed up like a doll for men to admire. I don't know too many millionaire women in their own right. Well there is Gina Rinehart but that was inherited money and she fights with her kids over it. Plus she looks like she needs gastric banding, so that is not going to inspire the next generation of girls the way Kim Kardashian will.

People these days would rather be famous most often rather even than happy. Can you imagine that sort of life ? I saw a doco on Lady Di once and as she came out of a lift there were literally hundreds of cameras in front of her. That was no way to live. Imagine schlepping down to Safeway on a Saturday Morning, felling crummy with a cold, no make up, hair a fright. You are dressed in your oldest, best friend, loose track pants and some horrible top.

And there are cameras hidden on you and someone sanps a photo of you and gets paid $200,000. for the pic as you are a Star without makeup. Shocker! If you go to Safeway late at night, half the young girls are there in PJ bottoms and they really couldn't care less. I look suitably shocked and then think if I had the balls I'd do it myself ! But imagine it splattered all over the magazines the next day.

Katie Perry has come out and said she wasn't prepared for being famous, and she hates it, And who could blame her ? If being famous is supposed to make you happy what of the starts like Michael Jackson and Whitney Huston ? You would have to have a very level head and a good down to earth family to stop that sort of preciousness. Someone that is prepared to say "pull your head in, you're acting like a prat !"

You can't go broke paying attention to a rich man, so what are you really doing ? If you are not telling him the truth because you are either in his employ or getting his handouts. Not good, not good for anyone. One of my brothers said recently the rich waste a lot of money as you feel guilty at having so much. I always found that the richer we got the harder it was to have "real money".

We didn't realise it till one good friend passed comment that we spoke in hundreds of thousands of dollars when others when struggling on basic wage. But the money wasn't real. It was coming in or going out or we had to buy new stock, or vehicles needed fixing or buying, wages had to be paid and suppliers. We took no wages ourselves for the first 5 years and I worked outside the business just to have housekeeping money.

I paid wages once out of child endowmment I had squirreled away and we paid tax one year out of all the 1 percent tax withheld by builders. All the pieces of paper sticky taped into an exercise book. And they were often thrown in the truck or utes as scrap pieces of paper. Over the year they amounted to $20,000 and thats what we owed in tax.

We were investigated by the tax department, and they had our books for 3 months and found nothing wrong. I was a meticulous operator while my husband was the brawn of the business. We both learned how people would not pay, were stuck with O/s Material that didn't conform to Australian Standards and it had taken 3 months to reach us. When you make big money you pay out big money.

We had all the trappings of wealth, the Ferrari, (Don't ask ?) red of course, the inground pool and sauna and spa and it was all lovely but we didn't have time to enjoy it. We worked 365 days of the year. We were rung on Christmas Day about a job once. Customers expect you to be available all the time. we had no time for the kids, no time for us, no time. We talked about work incessantly.

We bought a Rover and a Jeep Cherokee that had to be driven down from Queensland and then had to be fitted with not one but two gas tanks. We took it 4 wheel driving once. We sent the girls to Mentone Girls Grammar school, they hated it and they hated their Father driving the Ferrari to pick them up from school. One time it was the only car home and I had to drive it to pick up the girls. And I felt like a complete fuck head driving it. A normal suburban Mum in Keysborough.

We had massive contracts, The Caulfield Racetrack, Geelong trooting track, the Remand Centre in the City. We had to join 3 unions to be on site and even then we were thrown off site as my ex hubby was a hot head and hated unions. So I had to go in and negotiate with John Halfpenny to get our boys back on site, me, a Mum. Anyway it worked out alright and we could finish and get paid as we had thousands of dollars of material on site.

My ex cut fences down and loaded them back on the truck if people refused to pay. He was known as a cowboy in the industry, a mad man, a Ned Kelly, but he loved that and would just be more outrageous. I've seen him load a ute on to a forklift high in the air so a finace company couldn't grab it back. I've seen him kick so many debt collectors out and even one he kicked in the arse all the way down the driveway. The poor guy nearly wet himself.

Business was hard and we were in it for most of the 20 years of our marriage. He would track me down wherever I was. Once I went to Parkmore to get my hair done. He rang every hairdressers in Parkmore and founf me to ask me where the cheque book was. Everything was immediate and urgent and could not be put off. If we set posts in concrete the next day some clown would have pulled them all out or kids. We did golf course and horse studs in Mooroduc or Gisborne.

We promised next day service to keep haead of the game and it was nothing for hubby to be laoding trucks at 11 pm or running the cahin mesh machine all night and counting the clicks. One click meant a dollar and that kept him going night after night. He was demanding and pushy and a great fencer but his personality let him down. So he would send me in to the office to do the sackings, pay the wages or negotiate between subbies and workers beacuse he would have just yelled and got no where.
