The Winner Takes It All

Without Prejudice

"The Winner Takes It All"

I don't wanna talk
About things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser's standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The gods may throw the dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain?

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say?
Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again

A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad

So go the lyrics to The Winner Takes It All.

Beautifully, hauntingly sung by Anna from ABBA

Ironically she sang it shortly before she and Bjorn divorced and Benny And Frida separated shortly after, both very sad times for the hugely popular group.

Sad....

But there is a strange twist to the song.

The lyrics were written by Bjorn for Anna, his ex wife to sing. Benny collaborated.

Bjorn was at the time full of anguish.

So instead of

" So tell me does SHE kiss you, like I used to kiss you.? "

Is really saying,

" Tell me does HE kiss you.? "

Bjorn said he was not a drinker or taker of drugs but he finished a bottle of brandy by the time he arrived at the stanza of

"The Gods.........

He said he imagined a man, a lonely man walking down the corridors of what was once his family home, now empty. Deserted.

The line I find the saddest of all ?

"And I understand you've come to shake my hand"

What sadness is in that line. it immediately draws a picture and I am sure we have all been there.

Inside that moment of knowing that some one we once loved, laughed with, gazed into each other's eyes with rapture is to be gone from our lives. Even though it might all be for the best. Those memories will be forever with us, in our hearts and minds.

We can never look at that person again in the same way and it is sad.

And for both men and women.

But in this particular case it is the male heartbreak we hear while gazing on a female face.
