How To Clean Like A Five Star Maid

Without Prejudice

I once worked as a cleaner at The Sheraton Mirage. Before that I cleaned my own place but was never satisfied. It was boring, slow and I hated it. Now I love it as I make it fun and the lessons I learned at the gorgeous hotel were mine forever.

Set aside 3/4 of an hour to do a full clean, half an hour for a service clean and three hours for an entire double story house. I put a timer on, take the phone off and some great music on. I have a bucket with a garbage bag which I place in the middle of each room. It also has my own ammonia mix in a spray bottle. ( 10th of ammonia--cheap about $1 a bottle at the Supermarket ), a nylon scourere, a stainless steel scourer, rags. Thats it.

First run a sink of hot water for your dishes and leave to soak. Turn on the hot water in your shower, close all the doors and windows. Spray ammonia and water in shower and the hand basin and toilet and run as the fumes are eye popping. Make your bed and all beds as it gives you a surface to put things on. Turn off the hot water in the bathroom, you should have a steamy bathroom.

Carry your bucket with you from room to room. Put your rubbish bag in the middle of each room. Wear an apron or pinny with pockets or tied at the waist. Tuck your rag into the waistband.
Start at the left hand side of the room and work your way around. Dust everything as you go, mirrors, pictures, TV, computer screens.

Wipe light switches with a damp cloth from your bucket. Pick up all articles and make  a  stack at the door of each room. Kids clothes, cushions, throw on to the bed as well, you will put them all away later. Washing goes in a separate pile. Tidy as you go, all surfaces.

The bathroom is the room everyone hates but I love it the best. If you have a tiled bathroom
grab your shampoo and your metal scourer and scrub down all the tiles, floor last. Dry with a dirty towel. Scrub your glass doors as well, same mix and rinse. Dry.

If the hand basin is porcelain scrub with your nylon scourer, around taps especially and the water stem. Dry with a lint free rag. Pour bleach into the toilet and using a clean toilet brush scour the bowl, the back bit inder the lid, the seats, everything. Dry with paper towel and flush. ( At the Sheraton we were told on entering the bathroom to lower the lid without looking and flush before doing anything else.)

Also as you go wipe your door handles as well as your light switches, these surfaces carry the most germs and need to be clean. (If we have sick kids in the house, we wipe all the door handles with disinfectant, the top of the toilet buttons and the light switches. Stops germs spreading.

In the kitchen still leave the dishes soaking and working from left to right put everything away and clean all surfaces. (Feng Shui tip---Always have a clean stove Top--it brings money into the house, if you go to my girls places they will all have spotless stove tops, it works. )

Wupe down all the surfaces as you go and don't forget the over door. Put a bpwl of hot sudsy water in your microwave and a slice of lemon and blast it on high for 6 minutes. When it pings wipe all the gunk and steam out with paper towels. (My sis said when she went camping around Australia for a year, thick paper towel was the best for everything, even wiping bums.)

Dishes come last and then the floors, vaccum all the loose dirt. Mop and bucket with hot water and washing up liquid and a splash of ammonia will clean all your floors. If you are out of time and you hate vacuuming, sweep and sweep up carpet with a stiff broom. its a cheat thing we did if we didnt think the carpet needed vacuuming. (We used canister vaccums, they are the best).

Spray some apple disinfectant on your front mat inside the door. We were told that it immediately makes the guest coming in that everything is fresh and clean.

Dirt smells and looks dull. Clean surfaces bounce light around the room and make you feel energised. We had ladies with bad backs who were cleaners and were able to still bend and sweep and vac. . The whole process should only take half an hour for a quick clean. We could do a vacant dirty in 22 minutes and a service in 11 minutes, two of us working the rooms together. But some ladies preferred to work on their own.

The young girl back packers were the best, they cheated like mad and got away with it and taught us all how to cheat. When you are doing about 26 rooms per day, you have to moooove and any time saving tip is gladly welcomed. They would use the pink spray we were supposed to use, sparingly as it was almost like an acid that bit into cuts in your fingers for everything. All the fiitings were gold coloured and the pink stuff would eat into it we were told. They back packers didnt give a shit and used it on everything.

Thats it, you are done and you have used a little ammonia, a tiny bit of bleach a little disinfeactant. You can buy apple disinfectant in a concentrate at your Supermarket and water it down as needed. Your place should now look amazing and you are not exhausted nor out of pocket. Another tip, dust your mirrors and wipe with wet paper towel, You can scour them with your nylon scourer if they are really dirty. (Another Feng Shui tip, its unlucky to have dirty mirrors, ) And keep your lid closed on your toilet shut at all times .

Billy Connelly calls Feng Shui the smell of Bullshit wafting through the air but it can't hurt. Closing the toilet lid is to stop money escaping from the house and besides always flush a toilet with the lid down as its been proven bacteria showers the room if its open. And settles on your toothbrush, Urgh. Do your cleaning as fast as you are able, it saves you from boredom and keeps you ultra fit.
