Sayings Of My Mother For The New Generation
Without Prejudice
My Mother was a wondrous fey creature. On the one hand a lady with an aristocratic voice on the phone and on the other a down to earth Yorkshire woman, practical and demanding. She wanted the best for her 7 kids, an immigrant to Australia and she wanted us to show the world what we were made of.
We were her everything. Dad and us kids. She came to Australia with no family support, war damaged both physically and mentally. But when she smiled the world lit up. When we made her proud her world lit up and with a genius I.Q that hit the stratosphere she taught us of life, love, good, bad and here are some of her favourite sayings we were educated with.

Up in Annies Room behind the wallpaper ( If we asked where something was )
Travel broadens the mind
Never chase after a man or a bus, there is always another one coming along
If I said I was " trying," she would reply, "Yes, very "
This is not Nazi Germany and you can not be lined up against a wall and shot for what you believe in
You are Scottish, British and are proud
Your ancestors fought for you
The bravest soldiers were the Aussies
A soldiers last word is always, Mum
Expect nothing and you are seldom disappointed
And if we dared to ask what was for dinner
The reply was always the same
" Shit with sugar on "
The list is long and I am sure my siblings could add many more. Mum was a good Mum, a great Mum, she treated us as individuals, all of us were special in our own way. She never smacked. Neither did Dad except George a few times but he was a right little horror. To Mum he was her blue eyed boy.
Ian was her number one Son.
Jackie was a born housekeeper
I was a writer and she was thrilled I was, as was she.
