State Of Origin

Without Prejudice

I am becoming a Queenslander through and through. I watched my second State Of Origin rugby match last night and went for the Maroons, (QLD). It was a great game and we won by one point. The house echoed with cheering and we jumped up and down in excitement. The crowd of 55,500 went off at the Brisbane stadium, cheering until they were hoarse. One of the interviewers sounded so husky, he must have been screaming for a solid hour.

I have never really watched rugby before but here in Qld, it's the game that matters. My younger brother brought over a stew that had been cooking for 18 hours and melted in your mouth to eat. We added fresh rolls and snacks and nibblies with hot food at intermission. My younger brother usually likes to watch it in solitude but then his partner says he will fall asleep. There was no sleeping last night we were gripping hold of our seats.

The men good at what they do, playing rugby, big men, strong men, skilful men and I realised that it was no different than our ancestors watching Gladiators fight to the death. There are no weapons in this game however, just men and a ball. But it's enough to bring 55,500 people to their feet, it's an outing, it's entertainment, it's a spectacle. It's our new Gladiatoral Sport without the putting to death part. So we have changed as Human Beings, death is no longer a part of entertainment.

Some wear helmets on their heads, some wear bright neon shoes,  a no no years ago. I do get sick of the advertisements everywhere, that distract, surely the fact that 55,500 people pay entry should be enough to keep the game going, moneywise.
