Night Time Looking Across The Bay

Without Prejudice

The dusk comes early to Beachmere, one minute it's light and then dark, no real dusk, the sky shuts down its blue light with a curtain of black velvet. And when you step out on the sand at night, the sand is cold underfoot and the velvet soft sky is scattered with diamonds of stars. No one wanders this beach at night, a few intrepid tourists do, as to them the weather is warm.

But to a Queenslander it is cold and I can hardly believe them staying indoors when all around them is sea and sun and sky. One  old man I spoke to today has been here 33 years and came up from Melbourne originally. His wife used to have her horse in the neat garden next to their house. Now it's a weatherboard and shingle block of flats and a unit that face the beach.

They have long term rentals there and the place is as neat as a new pin. The view from the front verandah is the wide scope, in technicolour, Moreton Bay Marine Park. It stretches from Caloundra to South Stradbroke. You can dive trip the waters and take tours. There are turtles and manta rays, dugongs and 6 artificial reefs that were put in at a cost of 2 million, for the keen anglers.
