Premature

Without Prejudice

Kyan Flynn Hawkins was born 5 weeks premature, he weighed 4 and a half pounds and was as big as a loaf of bread. His head would nestle in the palm of my hand and he was in Hospital for ages at Monash.

Simon was in Perth and Yvette decided to take the boys and go see him, she flew over there and was met with "The Machinist", Simon skinnier than ever and "ON Something" but Yvette instead of turning tail and running stayed on. He was living in a messy flat with Teenagers calling in every 5 minutes, so she insisted they moved out and found somewhere bigger, It was lovely in Perth Yvette said, they had moved to some units with balconies and a pool, and Yvette and Simon and the boys were in the pool every day.

One hot day Yvette saw Jai getting into difficulties in the water and no sign of Simon who had gone up stairs, She didn't jump into the water, she had to sort of swoosh herself in, fully dressed and grab Jai, who was going down for the 3rd time. She wrestled him to the edge and sat on the side, she was then seven and a half Months pregnant. She got the boys upstairs, screamed at Simon and within 2 hours her waters began to break. She knew what it was and grabbed Simon up off the couch,

"Im having a baby here and it's not being born in Perth, understand, get off your lazy arse and get me back to Melbourne, and Mum, now!"

And he did it, He hired a ute and got their stuff and they flew that Afternoon Yvette wearing a big Jacket to cover her belly and they flew home to their house in Lexton Ave. I called down the next day to feed the dog and they were out on the front lawn. We chatted and Yvette said Mum I think I'm in labour and I calculated. She was not due till April the 1st and it was Feb 22nd, I stayed for a bit and Alena rang and had already rang the hospital and Yvette was going in now. I booked her in and she was in heavy labour straight away, Alena joining us, and The Doctor's frantically tried to slow things down.

But he was coming, Simon had called in and taken off again with Yvette's car, keycard and money. Alena had grabbed him and screamed at him, the whole Hopital would have heard, calling him every foul name she could think of. And we went into the labour ward with Yvette and told her and she said ring Kyle. So we rang Kyle at Dandy High, he was 14 and he loped down the road and joined us. Yvette wanted some sort of male Family there and out he came at last, tiny but perfect, healthy. I asked Kyle come over from his position at the window and he was crying, Kyans head had emerged and for modesty covered up Yvette with a sheet. And the head lay there for 30 seconds, a perfect face, a tiny human head and then the body pushed out. Kyle cut the cord and tears streamed down his face.

And all was fine, Yvette breast fed him for 2 days and then there was a problem. the baby had presented bile and vomited up feeds, Yvette was terrified but allowed him to be taken to Monash Hospital, He had a test that said there was a blockage somewhere in the bowel or intestine, suspected blockage. So that night after spending an exhausting day we waved him into the lift as he started his ascent to Theatre and we were so scared we couldn't even muster up a tear. We looked at each other hollow eyed

"He's in the best hands, now Yvette" And we held hands and said a small prayer of hope and healing and we went home to my unit and fed the boys hot dogs and collapsed into bed. I was working at HSV then so Keith gave me a couple of days off to be with the boys, while Yvette expressed milk madly. And we rang the hospital and he had pulled through and he was in intensive care. We told Kyle 14 to get his brothers up and we raced to the Hospital with the milk.

The floor was hushed when we walked in, it was going to be a beautiful day the sun already making it's presence known, and we walked across the almost misty light, back lit by early morning sun and there he was. We could reach in and stroke him, a massive bandage on his abdomen, breathing through a machine, but we knew he was OK, whatever had been blocking the bowel had unkinked itself so now there was nothing, except for his recovery
