Nora Ephron Died Today

Without Prejudice

I rememember reading her book Heartburn, it was about food and love and as it turned out an affair, her Husband had. The hurt of someone having an affair especially your husband in the old days, Pre Womens lib was such a helpless thing. Women stayed mainly at home in the 70;'s they were all wives and mothers. I was a child bride growing up in that time and Nora Ephron, in her book,  was like a mentor to me.

Her husband the writer Carl Bernstein had a very public affair while Ephron was pregnant with their first child. She wrote the book as funny as otherwise she felt it was too heartbreaking. And the end scene of her boarding a plane, children in hand, flying away from her philandering husband and into the unknown was both poignant and real to all women.

The song of Carly Simon's, "Coming Around Again" remains one of my favourites to this day. That and Ephrons writing, she also wrote "Sleepless In Seattle" and " When Harry Met Sally ". No one will forget the fake orgasm scene from that movie and the line, "I'll have what she's having ". Nor that Men and Women cannot be friends without Sex somehow getting in the way. I was blind to that fact until I saw the Movie.

And in Heartburn she included recipes some of which I also use to this day. I loved her style and grace under pressure. That must have been so difficult a book to write, Heartburn, based on fact and heartbreak. When your husband had an affair in those days where did you go ? How were you going to support yourself ? What about day care ? That was hardly in existence then and was impressively expensive. Still is for that matter.

Men had all the cards then and often it was a case of "Put up or Shut Up. Thank God things have changed for women since then. I can remember feeling in that book every ounce of her bewilderment and pain. It was a funny book but a sad one ultimately. The good thing is she went on to become a great writer and a success. No one has ever heard of the bird that he left her for. And that is just as it should be
